Obama Introduces a Dozen New Regulations Aimed at Your Right to Bear Arms
Even though Obama’s a lame duck President, don’t for one second think he’s going to let this last year and a half of his presidency just slide on by.
It looks like Obama and the Justice Department are going to introduce roughly a dozen new regulations to limit the freedoms of Americans on gun ownership. Many of these regulations will be aimed at those who are deemed to be mentally unfit for gun ownership. Others will work to limit the ability of those accused of domestic violence from obtaining or keeping weapons.
It’s just another long list of regulations which clearly do infringe on a person’s second amendment rights.
The Hill reports other regulations will be aimed at restricting high-powered pistols as well on gun storage requirements.
The pro-gun lobby says these new regulations are clearly an affront to our basic freedoms to own guns. “It’s clear President Obama is beginning his final assault on our Second Amendment rights by forcing his anti-gun agenda on honest law-abiding citizens through executive force,” Luke O’Dell, the VP of political affairs at the National Association for Gun Rights said.
These new regulations are being pushed forward under the guise of working to reduce criminal access to guns.
After Sandy Hook took place in late 2012, Obama quickly mounted a crusade to enact “common sense” gun laws to help keep America safe.
Obama was quoted saying” If America worked harder to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, there would be fewer atrocities like the one that occurred in Newtown…We can respect the Second Amendment while keeping an irresponsible, law-breaking few from inflicting harm on a massive scale.” he added.
What many argue is the qualifications to reduce gun violence might eventually dissolve into the erroneous and the trivial.
Michael Hammond who work on the legislative counsel for Gun Owners of America mentioned the potential of such laws to keep guns out of the mentally unfit, or the abusive might take a grim turn. “That could be a person who spanked his kid, or yelled at his wife, or slapped her husband,” he warned.
In order to work together on the initiatives, some in the gun lobby have said it might work better to ban gun ownership on a case by case basis (as opposed to unilaterally).
“A person who experienced a temporary reaction to a traumatic event or who has trouble handling household finances may well be treated the same as a violent psychopath,” the NRA wrote.
“Not only is this unjust and stigmatizing, it creates disincentives for those who need mental health treatment to seek it, increasing whatever risks are associated with untreated mental illness,” it added.
The truth is the path towards eliminating the right to own weapons would have to begin in such a way.
Small, incremental reductions in the ability of Americans to own guns would begin the eventual waterfall of legislation limiting our ability to own guns completely.
If Obama manages to get some of these regulations passed it will certainly illustrate his ardent opposition to helping keep America free.
