Netanyahu Makes Extra Time to Convince House Dems Iran Deal is Bad

Twenty-two House Democrats — most of them undecided on how they will vote on the pending resolution to reject the Iranian nuclear deal — met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for two hours during a recent trip to the Holy Land, The Hill reports.

"This is probably the most involved I've ever seen a prime minister get," Texas Rep. Gene Green, a 12-term Democrat, told the website, which noted that visiting lawmakers are usually given about 30 minutes with the prime minister.

The American Israel Education Foundation, an affiliate of the American Israel Political Action Committee, "a powerful lobbying group staunchly opposed to the deal," according to The Hill, sponsored the lawmakers' trip. The group brings delegations from both parties to Israel every two years.

In addition to Netanyahu, U.S. lawmakers met with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and opposition Labor Party leader Isaac Herzog. Both men also oppose the nuclear deal.

Israeli leaders also met with a 37-member Republican congressional delegation led by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, though with that group, according to the Jerusalem Post, "there was no need … to make a case against the Iran deal" since it would have "amounted to preaching to the converted."

The U.S. Congress has until Sept. 17 to approve or disapprove of the controversial nuclear deal brokered by the Obama administration, according to Reuters.

"A disapproval resolution could cripple the agreement by eliminating Obama's ability to temporarily waive most U.S. sanctions, and Obama has promised a veto if a resolution passes Congress," the wire service reports.

Just two of the 22 Democrats on the trip — Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton and New York Rep. Kathleen Rice — had made their positions known prior to the trip, according to The Hill. (Moulton supports it, Rice opposes it.)

Since returning, three more — Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark, Washington Rep. Denny Heck (they support it) and New Jersey Rep. Donald Norcross (he’s against it) — have announced their positions.

"The other 17, including (Democratic House Whip Steny) Hoyer, have not said how they'll vote, though several have indicated leanings," according to The Hill.
